KANSAS CITY, MO (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Kansas City Royals 6-4 on Wednesday, despite the return of former MVP Christian Yelich.
Yelich has been on the IL since early April and wasn’t able to find his groove on Wednesday, going 0-5 with a strikeout against the Royals, but first baseman Gary Sanchez helped keep the game close by hitting his fifth home run of the season and scoring twice.
Brewers starter Joe Ross took the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in five-plus innings, walking two and striking out two. Bryan Hudson held off the Royals in the 6th and 7th. Joel Payamps came on for the 8th, allowing five hits and three earned runs. He recorded just one out (one-third of an inning).
Kevin Herget closed out the frame, and Milwaukee would mount a threat in the top of the 9th with Brice Turang scoring an RBI double and William Conteras bringing home another on a groundout. But Yelich would end the game on a grounder to the pitcher.
Milwaukee will look to get back on track on Thursday night when they welcome the St. Louis Cardinals to American Family Field for a weekend four-game series. Tobias Myers will take the mound for the Brewers, while Lance Lynn will start for St. Louis, and the first pitch can be heard at 6:40 p.m. on WSAU.
